It’s another morning not conducive for views, as clouds cover the crest of the Smokies. Whether they burn off in time for us to enjoy any sunshine later is a game of wait-and-see. By late afternoon we are expecting decent storm chances that will remain present through the weekend. So if you have hopes of scaling the mountain without having to contend with turbulent skies, best to get after it early today. Temps in the mid 50s this morning combined with light winds and foggy conditions will have it feeling cool for some, but we ought to ascend into the mid 60s later, amplified by the high humidity. Even with all the precip forecast this weekend, temps will remain toasty a few more days.
Adding to the upcoming vehicular traffic surge recently discussed, the NPS has announced a temporary closure of the Gatlinburg Bypass between the Gatlinburg Overlook and Newfound Gap Road for bridge rehabilitation. The road closure will be in effect beginning Wednesday evening 8/21 through Sunday evening 8/26. Motorists will still have access to Campbell Lead and the portion of the bypass connecting the Spur to the Gatlinburg Overlook. So if choosing to enter the national park from the Tennessee side during that timeframe, you’ll have to do so from downtown Gatlinburg or by taking Little River Road around after entering from Metcalf Bottoms or Townsend.
Have a great day.
