The mountains have enjoyed another delightful day full of bright sunshine and satisfying hiking. Clear views in all directions gave travelers ample opportunities today to stop, stand, and scan the horizons in pure awe and wonder. Temps up top continue to hold tight to the 30s and 40s, making conditions cool early in the morning or late at night, but decent for the afternoon. If you were able to get outside and take advantage, then job well done! Thursday and early Friday are flipping the script, calling for strong winds and substantial rain. A High Wind Warning will be in effect from 4:00 PM tonight until 10:00 AM Thursday, calling for gusts upwards of 65mph.
On account of the hazardous conditions, the NPS have temporarily closed US 441 (Newfound Gap Rd). Cherokee Orchard Rd and Roaring Fork remain open at this time. Guests with reservations have comfort in knowing a cozy cabin awaits them, but the hiking tomorrow looks unavoidably wet, windy, and cold. Day hikers would likely find more comfort and joy in scaling the mountain after this sour weather passes through and clears up in time for the weekend. Please use caution if hitting the trails tomorrow.
