Shaking the clouds off the summit has proven difficult of late. We’ve had to rely mostly on the bright golden leaves and vibrant red berries of the transforming mountain ash to provide us with some unmuted color. We caught a partial break in the skies late yesterday afternoon, a nice tease of blues above and distant horizons, which eventually socked us back in overnight. And that’s how we begin this Friday, in our well-accustomed wall of grey. Hopefully the coverage lifts sooner rather than later so all those eager hikers making their way to the top today can enjoy the famous views instead of what’s afforded just on the lower 99%. But sometimes, you simply have take what you can get in the Smokies and enjoy it the max.
Aside from the clouds that have gotten cozy on the summit, a beautiful day and coming weekend appear to be in store for us. We’re talking several days of sunshine and warm temps both high and low. It’s possible we spend time in the mid to upper 60s the next few days. And if the humidity eases up, it’s going to feel down right fantastic for hiking. Any winds will be calm. As flowers fade and wilt while in lockstep with leaves slowly changing across the higher elevations, expect travelers eager to get their autumn on to flock to the most visited national park this weekend. That means fast-filling trailheads and bustling roadways to contend with. Plan accordingly and pack the patience!
Have a great day.
